Like many people either born and brought up in Budleigh, or who moved here later in life, a large part of our leisure time is spent in or around the sea and rivers of this amazing area.
Among our small team here, we have hardy swimmers – who get out almost every day of the year, kayakers, SUP and fishermen in Budleigh’s iconic bay, trout fishers on the River Otter, and volunteers on the Pebblebed Heaths, where small brooks tumble down to the Otter.
What we all want – and should expect – is that our waters will be sewage-free, and that those tasked with protecting our seas and rivers will be diligent and honest in their work and interactions.
It is clear to us all that South West Water, on many occasions, do not seem to share these values. Far too many times, sewage is dumped into our local sea and rivers, stopping us from swimming and affecting our protected natural habitats. Additionally, the responses and statements that we get from SWW often appear to be inaccurate or misleading.
The objective of this community site is to shine a light on issues and news affecting Budleigh’s water quality, and to ensure that SWW actually deliver the service that they are legally obliged to provide.

Many thanks to all those providing information and spreading the news, and particularly to the ESCAPE team (End Sewage Convoys and Poollution in Exmouth), who provide invaluable analysis and support.
